Who can microchip cats and dogs?

This is a common question from veterinarians and the public. Microchipping of animals is an act of veterinary medicine which can only be performed by a veterinarian. However dogs and cats may also be microchipped by veterinary nurses or qualified lay persons.

For cats and dogs the regulation of microchipping and microchip providers comes under the Dog Act 1976 and the Cat Act 2011. For further information Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) should be contacted
